Saints and Sinners Cemetery cleanup.

October 28, 2023

Hi Everyone,

Citizen turnout at our commission meetings has been amazing, thank you all for supporting our city. Your participation is essential to its health and well-being and it’s having an impact.

A Busy Saturday

Saturday, October 21 2023, was a busy one for Oak Hill. The Saints and Sinners Cemetery cleanup took place from 9:00 AM until noon. Scores of volunteers turned out with yard tools in hand; it was amazing. Click here to watch a quick video of the crew in action. Here’s a slideshow. Stewart’s Tree Pro of Port Orange donated their time and an awesome wood chipper for the cleanup. Click here to see it in action. JustServe.org sent out a huge crew from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  This group of hard-working volunteers showed up with chainsaws, a Bobcat skid steer and a John Deere tractor. The two pieces of heavy equipment were fitted with brush grapples that made quick work of picking up logs and brush. A priority for the cleanup was clearing brush along the borders of the cemetery. This effort resulted in the location of three gravesites that were lost in the overgrowth. The Saints and Sinners Board of Trustees provided grilled hotdogs, chips, and drinks for all. Thank you to Dru Ann Welch for a great event. Well Done! To learn more or connect with the Saints and Sinners Board of Trustees on FaceBook, click here.

Also, on Saturday, the Oak Hill Community Garden held an event that featured exhibits from a wide range of groups, businesses, and individuals that support the community Garden. Volunteers from the Oak Hill Garden Club worked diligently signing up new members. If you would like to become a member and support the Oak Hill Community Garden, contact Dana Greatrex at (386) 405-8261 or email her at dbg11@att.net. Harvey Martin and his family were on-site with their smoker, serving up delicious BBQ.

It smelled amazing…so good. Lynn Snyder, who owns a nursery in Edgewater, featured a Perma Culture Exhibit of plants and provided extensive guidance on the types of plants that do best in the varying conditions around your home. They also donated one plant to the community garden for each one they sold. There was a seed exchange run by Mary Hathaway, and the University Of Florida’s Agricultural Extension was manned by Master Gardener Jim Norman, who offered up advice on a wide range of topics including garden layout. Sarah Gaudreault from the Riverside Conservatory had a presentation dedicated to growing red, white, and black mangrove propagules for use in stabilizing the shoreline of our Indian River / Mosquito Lagoon. Volusia County Fire and Rescue

On Thursday October 26, 2023, six members from Volusia County Fire and Rescue gave a demonstration at city hall. This excellent presentation featured a short video on fire extinguisher selection and Lieutenant Jim Lucas demonstrating how to properly use one in your home. Lieutenant Lucas and the entire team fielded a wide range of questions. Topics included proper placement of CO2 and smoke detectors, gas and electric clothes dryers, kitchen fires, outdoor grills, and electrical fires. They also discussed the limited options available to a typical homeowner for fighting fires and emphasized that good judgement is key to deciding when to evacuate and call 911 for help. Also highlighted was the importance of a plan that includes a predetermined marshalling area where all family members and pets can be accounted for. What a great group of impressive individuals these lifesaving professionals are.

Our community is blessed to have them just around the corner and just a phone call away. Did you know that you can call the fire department non-emergency number and arrange for an inspection of your home from these experts? You can also preregister the room and disposition of any family member that has special needs and may require special assistance in the event of an emergency. Another interesting revelation was that you can provide, in advance of an emergency, any key codes for doorways and gates to the fire department. This is an excellent way to for citizens to reduce response time in an emergency. Everyone should take advantage of this service.
