Monday’s city commission will be a busy one and as usual our current leadership is showing no quarter. The agenda pack for the meeting, which by the way was sent out at 11:40 AM Friday October 11, 2024, is packed full. I’m surprised they bothered to send one out all.

Accountability is the idea that someone is responsible for their actions and can be held answerable for their performance or behavior.

So, I guess the statement in the online post that “the money spent had nothing to do with the developer” doesn’t hold water. A citizen of Oak Hill could and should ask his city commission exactly who are they’re representing. The citizens demonstrate concern by organizing, donating money, hiring an attorney, a planner and court reporter and the commission ignores them while the mayor spits in their eye.

According to the previous city administrator, the city of Oak Hill spent $50,273.50 of taxpayer money to save the developer his $25,000. Does this make you happy? Do you feel like you got good value for your tax dollars?

The new house and the septic system have been raised at least two feet higher than the previous ones. Hopefully, this will keep Ms. White and her dogs high and dry. Now if we can just get city hall to do the right thing and stop allowing its parking lot run-off to go flow into her yard. I think that after years of this she’s ready for a new start and the city should see to it that she’s no longer a victim.

As a citizen, what does representation in government mean to you? Here in Oak Hill, when you cast a vote for Mayor or Commissioner you expect them to act in the best interest of the entire community. Most people cast their vote for the person they think will do the best job. This means rational decision making and representing the interests of the citizen voter.

I hope you all are doing well and enjoying this 4th of July weekend with your family and friends. Celebrating our nation’s founding is the perfect time to reflect upon our good fortune. Fireworks are fun, beautiful, and inspiring, please remember that they can be dangerous and terrifying to pets and wildlife.

Every citizen should be able to use and enjoy their property as they see fit (within the boundaries of the law) without interference from their neighbors. Ms. White’s new home is cause for celebration and is something we can all be proud of. It’s always nice to see tax dollars used to provide those in need with relief. Now the question remains, will the City of Oak Hill step up, do the right thing, and complete the circle?
